The Civil and Environmental Engineering Department (CEE) at the University of California, Davis invites applications for a Postdoctoral Research Associate focusing on climate adaptation for water resources systems, under the supervision of Professor Jon Herman. The successful
candidate will join an interdisciplinary team that includes Cornell University, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
The primary goal of the position is to analyze nonstationary system vulnerabilities to inform infrastructure adaptation over time. Research questions will focus on methodological advances in support of this goal, using two complementary case studies: (1) the San Francisco Bay region,
and (2) the Great Lakes region. Both systems face a combination of risks to humans and the environment from flooding and water quality changes. The candidate will lead the systems modeling, leveraging inputs from a stochastic wind-wave generator, with a focus on connecting operational and infrastructure adaptations to observed future conditions. In addition to these research questions, the candidate will also contribute to collaborative team goals and stakeholder engagement. This is a two-year position beginning Summer or Fall 2021, and can start remotely.
Required:
• Ph.D. in Civil Engineering or a related field
• Strong programming experience
• Strong communication skills in oral and written English
• Ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team
Preferred:
• Background in statistics and operations research
• Proficiency with Python and high-performance computing
